What is Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)?

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) refers to the sudden flow of electrical energy between two objects with differing electrical charges when they come into contact or close proximity.

Certain components, such as computer memory, are highly sensitive to electrical currents. Accidental grounding or exposure to an unintended electrical discharge can damage these components, posing risks to devices across various industries

Many of us encounter ESD in everyday life. For instance, you might feel a small shock when touching a metal doorknob after walking on a carpet. On a much larger scale, lightning exemplifies ESD. The immense charge disparity between a cloud and the ground results in a powerful discharge, even without direct contact.
